Instructions for uploading and organizing

Background: There are extensive instructions and videos for working with flickr on the web. I’ve included a few brief instructions here, but not exhaustive step by step instructions. Read through what I have, but you might need to see a video or two, or read through some flickr instructions from the web. The only thing you need to know that’s specific to our website is to understand how the albums are organized for our website.

The way flickr works is: All photos are uploaded to the photostream. Albums are then lists of photos (photos can be listed in more than one album). Our current organization is to have an album called “Uploaded by <your name>” with everything you upload yourself. There are other albums containing SPOTT and SPOTTluck photos grouped by year, and these are the albums that are visible from the website. You can browse through the photos from this page to see how it’s organized. Note that the “Uploaded by <your name>” albums are not visible from the website – those are just so you can keep track of your own photos in the photostream. Note also that all photos in the photostream should be listed in two albums – once in the “Uploaded by <your name>” album and once in the appropriate website visible album (e.g. “SPOTT 19”). Feel free to make the relevant SPOTT albums for photos you have if they’re not there already. We can add additional visible non-SPOTT albums if people would like – talk to Dave if you would like to create a new album that is visible from the website.

You will most likely do photo album organizing on your computer at flickr.com, and do the photo uploading from your phone. So, you’ll most likely want start on your computer at flickr.com to set up a new “Uploaded by <your name>” album, then use your phone to upload photos, then go back to your computer to organize them into the right albums.

First, go to flickr.com on your computer and log in with the account info below (Username: djones02445@gmail.com Password: sawyerpoint-photos). Look around, familiarize yourself with fickr, and create an album for your uploads (Albums tab – New album) called “Uploaded by <your name>”.

Next, upload your photos. To do this from your phone, install the flickr app on your phone and have it log in to the account (Username: djones02445@gmail.com Password: sawyerpoint-photos). You don’t need a separate account of your own; hit x when it asks you to buy a premium membership. Then, go to your list of photos on your phone, select the ones to upload, and send the photos to flickr. You don’t need to enter titles and descriptions unless you want to, but do select the “Uploaded by <your name>” album for your uploads, you might need to click save to save the album specification.

Alternatively, if you have moved the photos to your computer previously, you can upload them from your computer by browsing to flickr.com and logging in. The upload button looks like a cloud in the top right of the screen. Drag photos to the box and they’ll be in the main photostream. Next, add these photos to your “Uploaded by X” folder. To do this, click on the Albums tab, then click on the “Uploaded by X” album, then click on “Edit in Organizr”, then drag all the photos you just uploaded into the “Uploaded by X” folder.

Finally, add photos to the correct website visible albums. Now that you’ve uploaded photos to the photostream and added them to your “Uploaded by X” album, you should then go back to flickr.com on your computer, log in, and add the photos to additional albums where you want them visible on the website (e.g. SPOTT 19 or SPOTTluck 19). You do this by selecting one of the visible albums (e.g. SPOTT 19), click on “Edit in Organizr, and drag the relevant photos into that album. They will then be viewable on the website.
